How to make a website Norton Safe?

Submitting a website to Norton Safe Web

Norton Safe Web analyzes and rates websites to see how they affect you and your computer. When you see the gray icon next to the search results, it indicates that Norton Safe Web has not analyzed that website. If you are a site owner, you can submit your website for evaluation. If your website is already evaluated by Norton Safe Web and you want to dispute the site rating, submit the website for re-evaluation.
  • If you own a website, you can submit your website to Norton Safe Web for evaluation. For more information, read the section Submit your website for evaluation.
    When the evaluation is complete, you get a notification from Symantec. If you have already submitted your website for evaluation, sign in to your Norton Safe Web profile and check the report for your website.
  • A website is rated as unsafe if it contains any threats. You can submit a re-evaluation request for your website if your site is rated as red. For more information, read the section Request a re-evaluation for your website
  • If you do not own the website, you cannot submit the website to Norton Safe Web for evaluation. However, you can write a review for that particular website, share your experiences and also rate the website which can help other users. For more information, read the section Write a review

Submit your website for evaluation

  1. Go to the Norton Safe Web portal.
  2. On the top-right corner of the webpage, click Sign In.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • If you already have a Norton account, type in your email address and password, and then click Sign In.
    • If you do not have a Norton account, click Sign up now. Complete the web form, and then click Sign Up.
      Follow the instructions in the email for ownership verification to activate and log on to your account.
  4. In the top-right corner, click your profile name, and then click My Profile.
  5. On the site dispute tab, click Add siteand type your website address.
    On successful registration of your website, an email with the site verification instructions is sent to your email address. Alternatively, the instructions are also available on the "site dispute" page.
  6. Follow the instructions to verify the ownership of your website. Following are the two methods for ownership verification:

Ownership verification by adding a Meta tag

  1. Copy the meta tag from the email you received, and paste it into your website's home page.
    Please be aware of the following placement and content issues:
    • The <meta> tag must be placed in the <head> section, before the first <body> section.
    • The authentication code string must exactly match the generated string.
    • Make sure that no extra characters are inserted, including spaces or formatting characters when you copy or insert the string.
    • Make sure that your source and data exactly match the original information after you copy or insert the string.
    • Make sure that no spaces are entered before, after, or in-between the beginning and ending quotes for the content information.
    For example:
    <head><title>Title text</title><meta name="norton-safeweb-site-verification"content="actual_string_content_with_no_spaces_or_line_feed_or_formatting_characters"/></head><body> ... </body>
    Note that some template-based or quick design site-building programs may allow the creation of custom meta tags through a user interface or "wizard" tool. When you create a custom meta tag with "wizard" tool, do not use the HTML code characters such as "< />". Your program automatically inserts such HTML code characters.
    To create a custom meta tag:
    • 1. Open your meta tag creator tool.
    • 2. For the meta tag name, type in norton-safeweb-site-verification.
    • 3. For content, copy and paste only your 128-character authentication code. (Make sure that there are no line breaks or spaces in the code.)
    • 4. Save the new meta tag to your home page, and then upload or publish the page.
    If you cannot place a new meta tag in your website home page, add the authentication code string to your list of keywords. For example:
    <meta name="keywords" content="keyword1, keyword2, nsw-actual_string_content_with_no_spaces_or_line_feed_or_formatting_characters"/>
  2. Go back to your Norton Safe Web account page.
  3. Click Verify Now.
    The status changes to ownership verified on successful verification of your website.

Ownership verification by adding an HTML file

  1. Go to the Norton Safe Web portal.
  2. On the top-right corner of the webpage, click Sign In.
  3. Type in your email address and password, and then click Sign In.
  4. Click My Profile.
  5. On the site dispute tab, under Actions, click Verify your site.
  6. Under Method of verification, select Upload an HTML file.
  7. Read the instructions and click the link to download the authentication file. Save the .html file to your desktop.
    Do not close the browser, and make sure that your Norton Safe Web account page is open.
  8. Upload the .html file to the root folder of your website.
  9. Go back to your Norton Safe Web account page.
  10. Click Verify Now.
    The status changes to ownership verified on successful verification of your website.

Request a re-evaluation for your website

    You cannot submit a re-evaluation request unless your ownership is verified. If your ownership is not verified yet, complete ownership verification for the website.
  1. Go to the Norton Safe Web portal.
  2. Click Sign In.
    Type in your email address and password, and then click Sign In.
  3. Click My Profile.
  4. On the site dispute tab, next to your website name, click re-evaluate.
    Type in any comments that you want to send.
  5. On the next page, review all the threats that are detected on your website, and remove the threats from the website.
    When Norton Safe Web completes re-evaluating your website, you will be notified. You can revisit the Norton Safe Web report to view the updated rating for your website.
